Benjamin recieved his letter and is greatly appreciated. May see him in New York next week if Edwin is there. He would like an hour of Edwin's time. He wants a sketch and interview the sme as Mr. Elwell for the November number. He will try to write it so it will help the sale of Edwin's books.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
